More and more people are searching for life partners. Yet ever fewer seem to succeed in finding lasting happiness and love. The singles market is booming, and with each new day, the marketers of conjugal happiness are coming up with new ideas designed to bring of people together. For very few of us want to be alone. Rita too is unhappy with our partner. Viewers might be surprised to learn that this vivacious insurance saleswoman is already 55 years old - even her blond hair is real. After two marriages, the Hamburg resident has been searching for a new partner for the past four years. She often asks herself: Where are all the good men hiding? “I'm attractive, I make a good impression, I'm financially independent, and I know what I want. That last quality seems to terrify men in my age group. Most of them seem to want a timid little mouse that stays obediently at home.† But Rita is not easily defeated. She surfs the Internet and attends singles parties. Rita is taking part in a singles sailing party on the Elbe River. “Sooner or later, I'm bound to find the right man.† Uli is also single. Over the years, he has evolved a pragmatic attitude. “I’m happy living like this, but I could be even happier with someone. But most women have problems with my independence and professional commitment.† Uli is a notorious single. The 40-year-old Cologne resident is a genuinely happy type who fully enjoys his bachelor existence: parties, get-togethers with friends, a life on the move. But at the same time, he is doing everything in his power to find a woman capable of winning his heart. Singles get-togethers, parties for over 30-year-olds, chats with women on the street, blind dates arranged via the Internet. “Often, I just don't have the time.† Kathrin is 41, a self-employed dentist with three children. Of necessity, her partner search is well organized. If necessary, the Hamburg resident surfs the Internet at the office in order to make dates for the evening. Without success, to date. “I'm not reliant on a man, I earn my own money, so I can be selective. Things used to be very different. Today, women don't really need men any longer.† But in the long run, life without a partner isn't quite what it should be. Which is why Kathrin has decided to try something new: a singles trip to the island of Sylt. She is taking a girlfriend - also single - along for safety’s sake: you never knew know who you are going to run into. This ZDF documentary accompanies three singles in their active searches for partners. We share in the highs and lows continually encountered by many singles during their “hunt,† so full of hope, longing, and anticipation.
