Paul Sahner
Godfather of Tabloid
If you want to know how Franz Beckenbauer dealt with his divorce, by when Uschi Glas was fed up by being cheated on or which celebrities had sex together when and where, you will learn this from articles in the German magazine "Die Bunte", written by Paul Sahner. Like no one else the ace reporter of "Die Bunte" won the trust of German celebrities. He is the one they tell, what really moves them. Paul Sahner established people journalism in Germany, influenced and shaped it. Throughout his career he has done more then 3000 interviews and written a number of books, the last one on Karl Lagerfeld. He succeeds where most journalists fail: Sahner meets the celebrities he writes about to catch up on a regular basis and develops a personal relationship with them. Today tabloid press has turned into a harsh business; only few journalists have exclusive stories. Many celebrities only give interviews, if they want to sell something. Paul Sahner on the other hand only writes about the stars he has met himself and knows which state of mind they are in. This is his rule up to today, though it has become harder. In 2014 Paul Sahner will turn 70 and decided to make a few changes in his life. He will write more books, travel less for "Die Bunte" and save more time for his private life. We follow Paul Sahner through his everyday work-life, to the publishing house Burda and attend editorial meetings of the magazine "Die Bunte". The film will draw the history of German tabloid press, which is intertwined with the person Paul Sahner. It will also ask the question of the change of topics and relevance. Where is the tabloid press standing today? Who becomes a star and how fast does he go down again? Are there still real role models? Are we really interested in the person behind the image? Would a show like Jungle Camp have been possible 30 years ago? Or had it always been the famous 15 minutes of fame Warhol stated?
Paul Sahner has many stories to contribute. He is a man who has experienced a lot, who is contemplative and has changed trough out the years - coming to the style of his interview technique.
