Premiere: Oskar Schlemmer - human figures
It is the sensation of the autumn art season of 2014. For the first time since 1977, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart – one of Germany's most renowned museums – is devoting a wide-ranging retrospective to Oskar Schlemmer (1888-1943). Schlemmer, one of the most important Bauhaus artists, was able to unite diverse artistic disciplines like no other creative personality of his time. His paintings, graphics, sketches, costumes, and stage designs continue to thrill a broad public. Here is an exhibition art lovers are simply dying to see.
The focus of this documentary is the exhibition "Visions of a New World" and the art of Oskar Schlemmer. Through references to individual works, this film features the individuals who made it possible to display Schlemmer’s works in such a comprehensive form: the museum’s director, the show’s curator, the conservators, the archivist – but also the museum's historian, who provides insight into the works’ provenances.
Oskar Schlemmer’ striking pictures, objects, and drawings come to life through people who discuss them in relation to their own experience, giving voice to their passion. This makes it possible to show his work in a highly direct fashion. Not just indispensable art historical data, but also individual forms of reception, specialized knowledge, personal anecdotes, and little-known historical episodes gradually disclose the impact and the magic of these masterworks.
