3 years - 3 new states

The history of the founding of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia

Quite naturally, as we say today, almost 30 years after reunification, of the "old" and the "new" states. But how were the East German states structured in 1990? Who determined beyond the limits? How did the five districts of the 14 districts and 217 districts of the GDR become the five "new ones"? Was this an equal decision? How did the former GDR citizens feel when they became Thuringians or Saxon-Anhaltians? Did they identify with their new federal state? The founding of the new federal states was accompanied by conflicts and many discussions. It was a process that caused a great deal of explosiveness within the former GDR, but was also very busy for the West. By the time of the meeting in the first joint Federal Council, German-German politics became reality. It started right after the fall of the Wall. On the Monday demonstrations first calls were made to abolish the districts and to re-establish the "old" countries, ie Mecklenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Thuringia and Saxony. After the first free People's Chamber election on 18 March 1990, the new government under Lothar de Maizière wanted to abolish in any case the centralist structure with the districts in favor of a federal country structure. But one important question was: should the five former countries be re-established or even larger countries formed which would perhaps have better economic opportunities and certainly more political influence in a unified Germany? As of May 31, the GDR government, in a first step on the way to national formation, dissolved the district days. On August 3, the government appointed a spokesman for each country in the country. On 22 July 1990, the five new countries were decided by resolution of the People's Chamber by the Land Entry Act. This ended the centralization introduced by the Soviet military administration after the Second World War. But how do people look back on this time today? How much did they identify with the new countries and how is it today? The three-part series goes on a journey through time and focuses on the important years of 1990, 1991 and 1992 with a view into the present.
