On Thursday evening (12.20 p.m.), ARD marks the death of the painter Jörg Immendorff by broadcasting a documentary about the artist. To create the 45–minute–long WDR film “I. Immendorff†, director Nicola Graef followed the artist for a period of two years. Viewers visit Immendorff in his studio, watch him interacting with students at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, and observe him at his retrospective at Berlin's New National Gallery. Oda Jaune-Immendorff, wife of the deceased artist, describes her husband's final years. We also hear from Irene Immendorff, the artist's mother, and his first wife, Chris Reinecke, about their experiences with the painter. Also sharing their perspectives are friends and companions, among them artists Markus Lüpertz and Jonathan Meese, the principal from Immendorff’s time as a teacher at a Hauptschule (secondary school), and a former student, along with Immendorff’s physician Thomas Meyer, who supervised his treatment right up until the end. An artist and a professor of painting, Immendorff died of heart failure in Düsseldorf at the age of 61. He leaves behind his wife and a small daughter. Immendorff suffered for years from ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease), an incurable neurological condition. With his expressive manner of painting, he was among the most important artists of his time. (ddp)
